A camera phone is generally a mobile with in-built camera accompanied by a server based infrastructure or protocols like those of MMS etc. allowing the user to share pictures easily among camera phone users and also on computers etc.

The year 1995 saw the emergence of the AppleVideophone or PDA and in the realm of digital cameras and mobile phone transmission the companies like Kodak and Olympus made a beginning while in Japan in 1997 May a digital camera with cellular phone was designed by Shosaku Kawashima. Japan is also the platform for the two competing projects like Sharp and Kyocera in 1997 as both their cell phones had integrated cameras.

Ricoh Corporation in mid 1996 designed an early wireless system in Menlo Park, California for image transfer from a digital camera and cellular telephone to a networked computer on the internet and in 11th June 1997, Philippe Kahn came up with a public demonstration of his self created seamless mobile phone with in-built camera. J-SH04 manufactured by Sharp was the first mobile phone with an integrated CCD sensor, with the Picture-Mail in Japanese (Sha-Mail).
The camera phones do not use connecting cables or removable media to circulate and transfer pictures. Generally the pictures are saved in the JPEG file format. The key manufacturers in this field consist of Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics, Sharp, Nokia, Sanyo, Samsung, Motorola, Siemens, and Apple Computer. Camera phones are known to have created a major social impact in the past few decades including both their positive and negative impacts.
